The Corsair was first thought to be too powerful to fly from a carrier. Slow speed handling problems and limited cockpit view made carrier landings difficult. It was first flown in combat by land based Marines, after modifications with a raised seat and bulged canopy, the F4U began ship board duties, from British carriers in '43 and U.S. carriers in '44. The design utilized the smallest possible airframe with the most powerful engine available. A maximum speed of 417 mph@20,000 feet, made it one of the fastest fighters of World War II.
