The PBY "Catalina"was probably the Navy's most useful aircraft during World War 2.Designed for use as a patrol aircraft,the PBY filled a variety of roles,anti-sub warfare,recon and search and rescue.The Catalina's first wartime acheivement was locating the Battleship Bismarck in service with the R.A.F.
